How to use this calculator

Enter at least 5 recent rounds with their scores, course ratings, and slope ratings. You can add up to 20 rounds for a more accurate estimate. The calculator automatically determines how many of your best differentials to use based on the number of rounds entered.

Course rating represents the expected score of a scratch golfer on that course from a specific set of tees. Slope rating measures the relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. Both values are printed on scorecards and available through course websites.

The results display your estimated handicap index, the individual differentials for each round, and which differentials were selected as your best scores. Use this estimate as a personal reference point. For an official handicap recognized at tournaments and for posting scores, you will need to register with your local golf association.

Understanding the handicap differential formula

The handicap differential normalizes your score against the difficulty of the course you played. A low differential means you played well relative to the course difficulty, while a high differential indicates a round above your typical level.

By using 113 (the standard slope) as a constant, the formula makes differentials comparable across all courses. A differential of 15.0 means the same thing whether you shot it on a municipal course or a championship layout.

Frequently asked questions

How is a golf handicap differential calculated?

The formula is (Score minus Course Rating) times 113 divided by Slope Rating. This normalizes your performance against a standard slope of 113, allowing fair comparison across courses of different difficulty levels.

How many rounds do I need to estimate my handicap?

You need a minimum of 5 rounds. With 5 rounds only your single best differential is used. With 20 rounds, the best 8 are averaged. More rounds produce a more stable and representative estimate.

Why is the result multiplied by 0.96?

The 0.96 factor reduces the average by 4 percent. This reflects that a handicap represents your potential rather than your average. It encourages golfers to play to their best ability.

Where can I find course rating and slope rating?

Both values are listed on the scorecard for each set of tees. They are also available on course websites, golf association databases, and most golf GPS apps. Course rating is typically between 67 and 77. Slope ranges from 55 to 155 with 113 being average.

Is this the same as an official handicap?

No. This is an unofficial personal estimate. An official handicap requires registration with a golf association, peer attestation of scores, and additional adjustments such as playing conditions calculations and maximum hole scores.
