How to use this calculator
Choose your estimation method at the top. The quick method lets you select your home size (studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, etc.) and generates an estimate based on typical household contents. The room by room method lets you specify the exact number of each room type for a more precise count.
If you select the room by room method, enter how many bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, offices, and storage areas you have. The calculator adjusts box counts based on the typical contents of each room type. Bedrooms and kitchens tend to need more boxes than bathrooms or hallways.
The results show a breakdown of boxes by size (small, medium, large, wardrobe, and dish pack) along with estimates for packing supplies like tape rolls, bubble wrap, and packing paper. Use the totals as your shopping list when purchasing or collecting boxes before your move.
Packing tips for a smoother move
Start packing at least two weeks before your move. Begin with rooms and items you use least (guest rooms, seasonal items, books). Save everyday essentials for last. Pack one room at a time and label every box with its contents and destination room.
The golden rule of packing: heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes. A large box full of books will be impossible to carry and may break. Keep each box under 50 pounds for safe lifting.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes do I need for a 3 bedroom house?
A typical 3 bedroom house needs 50 to 70 boxes total: about 15 small book boxes, 25 medium boxes, 12 large boxes, 5 wardrobe boxes, and 3 dish pack boxes. The exact number depends on how much stuff you have and how well you declutter before packing.
Where can I get free moving boxes?
Check local buy-nothing groups, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist free section, Nextdoor, liquor stores (sturdy boxes with dividers), bookstores, grocery stores, and office buildings. Recycling centers often have boxes available too. Ask neighbors who recently moved.
What size box should I use for what items?
Small boxes (1.5 cu ft) are for heavy items: books, canned food, tools, and small electronics. Medium boxes (3 cu ft) are for most household items: dishes, pots, toys, and shoes. Large boxes (4.5 cu ft) are for light bulky items: pillows, linens, lampshades, and stuffed animals. Never fill a large box with heavy items.
How do I pack fragile items?
Wrap each fragile item individually in packing paper, then add bubble wrap for extra protection. Pack dishes vertically like records, not flat. Fill all gaps with crumpled paper so nothing shifts. Label boxes FRAGILE on multiple sides and the top. Put heavy items on the bottom, light on top.
