Mulch Calculator

Calculate how much mulch you need for your beds, plus cost estimates for bulk and bagged options.

Mulch calculator

Enter your bed dimensions and desired mulch depth to see how much you need.

1.×ft

Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards. Divide cubic feet by 2 for the number of standard 2 cu ft bags.

How to use this calculator

Start by selecting your desired mulch depth using the preset buttons or entering a custom value. Then enter the length and width of each bed you want to mulch. Click "Add another bed" to calculate coverage for multiple areas at once.

The calculator instantly shows the total cubic yards needed for bulk delivery, the number of standard 2-cubic-foot bags, and cost estimates for both options. The coverage summary breaks down each bed's contribution to the total.

Mulch depth guide

DepthBest forCoverage per yd³
2"Flower beds, annual plantings, refreshing existing mulch162 sq ft
3"General landscaping, perennial beds, shrub borders108 sq ft
4"Weed suppression, pathways, areas with heavy weed pressure81 sq ft

Never exceed 4 inches of mulch depth. Too much mulch can suffocate plant roots and create habitat for pests.

Bulk vs. bagged mulch

Bulk mulchis sold by the cubic yard and delivered in a dump truck. It's the most cost-effective option for projects larger than about 3 cubic yards. Expect to pay $30–$45 per cubic yard, plus a delivery fee of $50–$100. You'll need a spot for the pile and a wheelbarrow to distribute it.

Bagged mulchcomes in 2-cubic-foot bags from garden centers and hardware stores, typically costing $4–$6 per bag. It's more convenient for small projects — no delivery fee, easier to transport, and you can store unused bags. However, the per-yard cost is roughly 50–80% higher than bulk.

Rule of thumb: if you need more than 3 cubic yards, bulk delivery almost always saves money even after the delivery fee. For smaller jobs, bags are simpler and let you buy exactly what you need.

Frequently asked questions

How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?

Multiply your total square footage by the desired depth in inches, divide by 12 to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For example, a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards.

How much area does a cubic yard of mulch cover?

One cubic yard of mulch covers approximately 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, or 81 square feet at 4 inches deep.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bagged mulch?

Yes, bulk mulch is significantly cheaper per cubic yard. Bulk mulch typically costs $30–$45 per cubic yard, while the equivalent volume in bags costs roughly $54–$81. However, bagged mulch is more convenient for small projects and doesn't require a delivery fee.

How deep should I apply mulch?

Most landscaping benefits from 2–4 inches of mulch. Use 2 inches for flower beds and around annuals, 3 inches for general landscaping and perennials, and 4 inches for weed suppression and pathways. Never exceed 4 inches as it can suffocate plant roots.
