How to use this calculator

Enter the first day of your most recent period, your average cycle length, and your average period length. The calculator will estimate your ovulation date, fertile window, and next expected period for the current cycle and the next two cycles.

The visual calendar highlights period days in pink, your fertile window in green, and your ovulation day in teal. Use the 3-cycle forecast table to plan ahead.

Understanding your menstrual cycle

The menstrual cycle has four main phases: menstruation (your period), the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. Ovulation is when an egg is released from the ovary and is the time when conception is possible.

The luteal phase (from ovulation to your next period) is relatively consistent at about 14 days for most people. This is why the calculator estimates ovulation by counting 14 days back from the expected start of your next period rather than forward from your last period.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ovulation day?

Ovulation is estimated by subtracting 14 days from the expected date of your next period. For a 28-day cycle, ovulation typically occurs around day 14. For a 32-day cycle, it would be around day 18. This is based on the luteal phase, which is fairly consistent at about 14 days for most people.

What is the fertile window?

The fertile window is the span of days during which conception is most likely. It includes the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, totaling 6 days. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, and the egg is viable for about 12 to 24 hours after release.

Can I use an ovulation calculator as birth control?

An ovulation calculator should not be relied upon as a method of birth control. Cycle lengths can vary from month to month due to stress, illness, travel, and other factors. Calendar-based predictions alone are not reliable enough for contraception. Speak with a healthcare provider about effective birth control methods.

What if my cycle is irregular?

If your cycle varies significantly from month to month, calendar-based ovulation predictions will be less accurate. Consider tracking additional signs of ovulation such as basal body temperature, cervical mucus changes, or using ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) for a more reliable estimate. Consult your healthcare provider if your cycle is consistently irregular.

How accurate are ovulation calculators?

Ovulation calculators provide an estimate based on average cycle patterns. They are most accurate for people with regular, consistent cycles. However, the actual day of ovulation can shift due to stress, illness, hormonal changes, and lifestyle factors. For greater accuracy, combine calendar tracking with physical signs and ovulation predictor kits.
