How to use this calculator

Select whether you have a dog or cat, enter their age in years, and for dogs, choose a size category. The calculator instantly converts their age to human years using the modern non-linear formula that veterinarians recommend.

You can enter half-years (like 0.5 for a 6-month-old puppy or kitten) for more precise results. The age milestone table shows key ages so you can see how your pet's aging will progress over time.

Why the 7-year rule is wrong

The popular idea that 1 dog year equals 7 human years is a rough average that doesn't reflect how dogs actually age. Dogs mature much faster in their first two years, a 1-year-old dog is already sexually mature and roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old teenager, not a 7-year-old child.

After the rapid early development, aging slows down considerably. The rate also depends heavily on the dog's size: small breeds age more slowly and live longer, while giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans. This is why veterinarians now use non-linear formulas that account for these differences.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 7-year rule for dog aging accurate?

No, the old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule is not accurate. Dogs age much faster in their first two years, a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old dog is about 24 in human years. After that, aging slows down, with each additional year adding 4 to 7 human years depending on the dog's size.

Do small dogs age differently than large dogs?

Yes, small dogs age more slowly than large dogs after the first two years. A small dog (under 20 lbs) adds about 4 human years per dog year, while a giant breed (90+ lbs) adds about 7 human years. This is why small dogs typically live 12 to 16 years while giant breeds often live only 7 to 10 years.

How do you convert cat years to human years?

A cat's first year equals about 15 human years. The second year adds 9 more, bringing a 2-year-old cat to roughly 24 human years. After that, each additional cat year equals about 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is approximately 36 in human years.

At what age is a dog considered a senior?

It depends on size. Small dogs (under 20 lbs) are considered senior around age 10, medium dogs (20 to 50 lbs) around age 8, large dogs (50 to 90 lbs) around age 7, and giant breeds (90+ lbs) as early as age 5. Senior dogs benefit from more frequent vet checkups and age-appropriate nutrition.
