How to use this calculator

Begin by entering the height and width of your picture frame in inches. Then measure the wire or hanger offset, which is the distance from the top edge of the frame down to the point where the wire or hook will catch the nail. Pull the wire taut with your finger to simulate hanging tension before measuring.

If you are hanging the picture above furniture, enter the height of that piece (sofa, headboard, or console table). The calculator will position the frame 6 to 8 inches above the furniture so the artwork looks intentionally connected to the space below it. Leave this field empty for open wall placement.

The result tells you exactly how high to place your nail or hook, measured from the floor. Mark that spot on the wall with a small pencil mark, double check the measurement, and drive your nail. The calculator accounts for the wire offset so the frame hangs with its center at eye level.

How to measure for picture hanging

Start by measuring the height and width of your frame. Then find the wire or hanger offset by pulling the wire taut with a finger and measuring from that point to the very top edge of the frame. This offset tells you how far below the top of the frame the nail actually needs to sit.

If you are hanging above a sofa, headboard, or console table, measure the height of that furniture piece. The calculator will position the bottom of the frame 6 to 8 inches above it so everything looks connected rather than floating too high on the wall.

Frequently asked questions

What height should I hang a picture on the wall?

The standard rule is to place the center of the artwork at 57 to 60 inches from the floor. This range matches average eye level and is the same guideline used by most museums and galleries. If you are hanging above a sofa or bed, position the bottom of the frame 6 to 8 inches above the top of the furniture instead.

How far apart should pictures be on a gallery wall?

Keep 2 to 3 inches of space between each frame on a gallery wall. This spacing is close enough to make the grouping feel intentional while leaving enough room so individual pieces do not look crowded. Start with the largest or most important piece in the center and build outward from there.

What hardware should I use for heavy picture frames?

For frames under 5 pounds, a single picture hook or adhesive strip works fine. Frames between 5 and 20 pounds do best with rated picture hooks or two hooks for extra stability. For 20 to 50 pounds, use a French cleat or toggle bolt anchored into drywall. Anything over 50 pounds should go into a wall stud using a heavy duty lag screw or a professional French cleat system.

Should I use one hook or two hooks to hang a picture?

Two hooks are better for frames wider than 24 inches or heavier than 15 pounds. Place the hooks roughly one third of the frame width in from each side. Two hooks distribute the weight evenly, keep the frame level over time, and prevent it from shifting or tilting when the wall gets bumped.
