Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate sales tax on a purchase?

Multiply the item price by the tax rate expressed as a decimal. For example, a $50 item at 8% tax: $50 x 0.08 = $4.00 in tax. The total is $50 + $4 = $54.00.

How do you reverse-calculate sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by (1 + the tax rate as a decimal). For example, a $54 total at 8% tax: $54 / 1.08 = $50.00 pre-tax price. The tax was $54 - $50 = $4.00.

What is the average sales tax rate in the US?

US state sales tax rates range from 0% (in states like Oregon, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Alaska) to 7.25% (California). However, local taxes can add 1-5% on top, making combined rates as high as 10% or more in some areas.

Are groceries taxed?

It depends on the state. Most states exempt unprepared groceries from sales tax. However, prepared food, candy, and soft drinks are taxed in many states. A few states tax all groceries at the full rate.

Does sales tax apply to online purchases?

Yes. Since a 2018 Supreme Court ruling, states can require online retailers to collect sales tax even without a physical presence in the state. Tax is typically based on the buyer's shipping address.
